The Toyota Technical Training –Best Practices and Recommended Solutions
Project Description
COMPANY BACKGROUND
PROJECT BACKGROUND
A primary component of Toyota and its luxury brand, Lexus, product life cycle includes its ability to service their North American vehicles. They define the Toyota certification process such that only specific certified levels of technicians can work on certain car issues.
There are three ways that Toyota ensures technicians are available to services their automobiles.
- T-Ten.com is Toyota’s website that is a future technician’s FAQ site about their North America certified technicians program. Purpose is to educate and solicit enrollment as a Toyota technician.
- T-Ten Online is Toyota’s site that is used by community colleges, high schools and technical schools that manages students in the technician program.
- T-Ten Dealer Portal allows dealers to connect potential graduated technicians to them for employment.
The challenge is that the three ways do not necessarily talk to each other and in fact a silo effect has occurred. Example: A dealer does not know a local school has 30 Toyota technicians graduating and looking for jobs.
Another challenge is how to make graduating technicians visible to dealers easier. Amazon is often chosen because their process is so seamless and frictionless. How can Toyota reach this same frictionless effort in their process.
PROJECT SCOPE
Geography is North America. Industries to research are not only other auto companies, but also companies similar such as Caterpillar, John Deer (heavy mechanical equipment that requires specialized service and maintenance).
Although we know post-Covid, there are challenges in finding talent, scope excludes people resource challenges and process implementation recommendations. The focus will be on improving the technology solution, referencing the sandbox and platforms (#1,2,3 in the description section).
PROJECT DELIVERABLES
- Research: Best practices on the technology solution of how other auto makers and other industries that are similar (Caterpillar, John Deer) are connecting schools, dealers, and future technicians together for a seamless and frictionless effort to ensure a pipeline of technicians are available to service Toyota’s automobiles at the Toyota dealerships.
- Recommendations: Based on your research findings, recommend to Toyota the best solutions for them to make to address the issues.
